Wellness and Vaccination

One of the best things you can do for your pet is to keep him or her healthy. And one of the easiest and least expensive ways to do that is by bringing in your pet for regular exams and vaccinations. Dogs and cats (and other pets) age far faster than people, so significant changes in your pet’s health can happen in a short time.

Small Animal Care

Our veterinarians are experienced in providing specialized care and treatment for exotic companion animals, including ferrets, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits. We understand their unique health needs and can provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services, as well as counseling on nutrition, behavior, and general care.

Nutritional Counselling

If your adult dog or cat is healthy, you may have chosen a pet food based simply on whether or not your pet will eat it. Cost may also play a factor in your decision. However, not all pet foods are equal. And feeding the right amount is not as simple as following the directions on the package (they’re just guidelines).

DENTAL DISEASE Almost every pet will experience some degree of dental disease in their lifetime! Plaque bacteria thrive in your pet’s mouth (ever smelled that ‘doggy’ or ‘kitty’ breath?). At first, they just live on the surfaces of the teeth and gums, but if not removed regularly by brushing or wiping, they will infect the […]

Annual Health Assessments Bringing your pet in for their annual visit is still one of the most important things you can do for his or her preventative healthcare.  You can bring any questions or concerns about your pet for the veterinarian to answer.  The veterinarian will ask you several questions to find out how your […]

Sometimes your pet’s behaviour/actions can tell us they are not feeling well, but other times your pet can hide disease really well. This is why annual examinations and bloodwork is so helpful. Many medical conditions can be found and treated easily with regular veterinary visits and bloodwork. At Avonlea Animal hospital we believe that your […]

MICROCHIPPING Despite your best efforts, accidents can happen and your pet could go missing. Thousands of animals end up in shelters every year. Unfortunately, many of these animals are never reunited with their families because they can’t be identified. A collar tag is a great way to identify your pet; however, if this were to […]

Just like in humans, nutrition is an important cornerstone for the health of your pet. And just like in humans, nutritional requirements change over time, depending on age, lifestyle and medical conditions. For example, cats and dogs with kidney disease require specialized diets, and small breed dogs are often prone to urinary and dental disease […]

Our doctors are available for both routine and non-routine surgeries. Prior to all surgical procedures, the patient will have a physical examination and blood work to assess for any concerns that need to be addressed prior to surgery or at the time of surgery. Presurgical blood testing allows the doctors to assess and ensure your […]

How Ultrasound Works Ultrasonography involves passing a probe over your pet’s skin after the hair has been shaved away, while it emits harmless ultrasound waves (which are like sound waves, but at a higher frequency that we cannot hear). As the sound waves bounce off tissues and structures inside your pet’s body, they are detected […]

When the immune system is exposed to an infectious agent such as a virus or bacteria, it sets to work killing and eliminating it. One of the ways it does this is by making proteins called antibodies that specifically recognize that virus or bacteria and attach to it, flagging it for white blood cells to […]

At some point your veterinarian may recommend that your pet have an x-ray (technically known as a radiograph). This is a diagnostic tool that is very helpful to literally see inside your pet’s body. Examples of things that are commonly diagnosed with radiology include: broken bones, intestinal blockages or foreign objects, heart enlargement, lung conditions. […]
